Mawgan

Mawgan is an attractive village set between the Helford River and the historic Trelowarren Estate. It has a Shop with Post Office facilities, the excellent "Ship Inn & Old Courthouse Restaurant", and a beautiful Church, parts of which date back to the 13th Century. The Church contains the tomb of Sir Richard Vyvyan (died 1665) who was incommand of the Royalist forces at Dennis Head during the Civil War.

The Trelowarren Estate has been owned by the Vyvyan family since 1427 and covers more than a 1000 acres of woods and farmland running from the Goonhilly Downs to the Helford River. Although the building dates from several periods the predominant architectural style is"Gothic" of about 1750. There is a visitor reception centre, galleries, studios and the excellent "New Yard Restaurant".
